Quake1
This game really depended on how you looked at it. It's only real rival was Duke Nukem. Duke 3-D had fun gameplay. The graphics were great and it also had lots of little things that gave it favor over Quake. Quake had little fun. It was dungeon after dungeon and the colors were sooo dreary. But the technology was there, and I knew that once this was improved, the games would be much better. Since this would be the future of gaming (just the fully 3-D part, not just the Quake engine), the other companies would have to take astep backwards in order to progress. ID had the technology and could work on gameplay, while the rest would have to begin from scratch.

Hexen2
This will be the first game coming out to rival Quake. This won't be too hard since most of the total conversions the never came out would rival Quake. Hexen II is still using the 256 color palette but is using all different colors like greens, blues, and purples (I won't comment on the colors in Quake, that's been killed already). The framerate for the characters has doubled from 10 fps to 20 fps.The characters also have a higher polygon count and will be more realistic than Quake characters.
