More DM maps

Russ has popped out another DM map after his latest Chocolate Factory. You can get it here.

More on custom sounds

Some people have been asking how to add custom sounds into your maps and here's how I did it. I'm not sure if it will work for you, but what the hey:

There's a few things that you need to do.

1) get a .pak extractor. Not sure where, but the one that works for quake/q2/hexen2 will work for half-life

2) go into the sound/ directory within the pak0.pak

3) extract sentences.txt and put it in half-life/valve/sound/

4) get a .wav file (8-bit, mono, 11KHz) of whatever you want the NPC to say and put it in any dir under half-life/valve/sound/ In my case, the file name was sighting.wav and I put it in half-life/valve/sound/bigfoot/

4) Open sentences.txt and go to the bottom so you don't erase anything that's needed for the game.

5) add this line

NAME nameofdir/nameofsound

Where NAME is just a tag you need to remember (it will be used later in Worldcraft)
nameofdir is the name of the directory you put the sound in
and nameofsound is whatever you named the sound.

My line looks like this.

BIGFOOT bigfoot/sighting

Do not add.wav to the end of the sound name.

6) download my map, since I've have a hard time getting scripted sentences to work and I really couldn't help you getting it to work.

7) Open WorldCraft 2.0, and then open my map (test1.rmf, remember to unzip it first)

8) Copy the scripted_sentance , monster_gman , and the multimanager entities and place them in your map.

9) Edit the scripted_sentence and change only the sentence name (this will eliminate an chance of error between coordinating the three) to whatever you put in the sentences.txt as NAME. I put !BIGFOOT . Remember also to add an ! to the beginning so Worldcraft streams he sound rather than takes up memory.

10) Compile and pray

Map source

If you're interested, I've posted the source to my map with the custom sound. You must also download the map file too so you can see how the sentences.txt can be edited. Look at the last line of the file to see my change.

THE CLIP BRUSH IN THEORY AND PRACTICE

This old level has been updated with a third installment, this time about clip brushes. Here's some random clip:

Proper use of the clip brush is an art, and one that only years of level design experience can enable one to master. Injudiciously employed, a clipbrush is likely to be an embarrassment: The player senses that something is being covered up, a weak design decision has been fudged. A sloppy clipbrush makes no sense. It sits in the middle of a window that is obviously low enough and large enough to jump through, blocking your way for no apparent reason other than that the level designer was unable to come up with a truly convincing way of keeping you from jumping out the window.

Custom Sound map

I found out how to add custom sounds into Half-life maps. Here's the map I made that makes the gman says some funny stuff (it's clean don't worry). Remember to put all the files in the correct place as set in the zip. If you don't know how or forget, here's the where they should go.
test1.bsp     - half-life/valve/maps/
sentences.txt - half-life/valve/sound/
sighting.wav  - half-life/valve/sound/bigfoot/
Yeah it's weird, but go try it.

Being Slack

Ok! So after last weekends mad rush to complete Half-Life, which I did, its taken me an entire week of no-computer to get over the mind-numbingness of sitting 12 hours in-front of my PC screen for nearly three days solid. :(

Anyway, here is my little effort to catch-up on a few things. there is a rather cool site, and the content isnt bad either, over here, its called the Texture Studio. Not bad!

Also Radium already has five reviewed deathmatch maps online, so download a few and see what you think... mine will be ready 'soon'! heh Well i've spent most of this weekend getting a few of the textures in, and I'll wait till I get a few praccy deathmatches in it before I consider it ready to be handed out... I'll keep you posted.

More PPM madness

A scientist in the HEV suit has been made into a plug-in model. you can download it here. As always, better to download in now, rather than let it lag your game later.

More maps

Russell Hayward sent word of his new DM map. It can be downloaded at his site here.
